Obituary for William Koster

WILLIAM PFEIFFER KOSTER, 88, of Milford, Ohio, died Tuesday, June 6, 2017 in Cincinnati.
Dr. Koster was a co-founder of Metcut Research Associates (now Metcut Research Inc.), a materials engineering company and metallurgical laboratory in Cincinnati. He served as its President in 1978 and became Chief Operating Officer and Chairman of the Board in 1982. Following his retirement in 1994, he continued to serve as Chairman until 2008 and as a director until 2016.
Dr. Koster was involved in the design and construction of Metcut’s first mechanical test machines, which lead to Metcut’s growth into one of the world’s pre-eminent materials testing laboratories. During his tenure as President, Metcut established its French subsidiary in Nantes to provide testing services to the growing European market, particularly in the aerospace industry. He was instrumental in transforming Metcut from a partnership to an employee-owned company in 1976, a source of pride and symbol of his commitment to his colleagues and employees. In 2006, he proudly wrote and published A History of Metcut Research Associates Inc. – An employee-owned corporation.

Dr. Koster was well published and active in metallurgical societies, including ASM International (formerly The American Society for Metals). He was elected a Fellow of the Society and served as its President in 1992.

He was also an expert in antique counterfeit American paper money, a Boy Scout leader, a train enthusiast, and a world traveler. He was an avid sailor and could be found at the helm in the waters of Lake Erie near Port Clinton, Ohio on Eagle IIII, his boat named in honor of his four Eagle Scout sons. He will be remembered as a loving father, a brilliant engineer, a thoughtful leader, a good husband, and a generous human being. His nickname was "Big,” not for his stature, but for his heart.
He is survived by his sons Kenneth H. Koster of Cincinnati, Ohio, W. Frank Koster of Charlotte, Vermont, Barrett E. Koster of McLean, Virginia and James R. Koster of Brooklyn, New York, as well as seven grandchildren. His beloved wife, Marcia Kyrlach Koster, passed away in 1995.
Visitation will be at Madeira Presbyterian Church from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Friday, June 16, 2017, with funeral services at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 17, 2017. Private burial will follow at Spring Grove Cemetery.
Memorial gifts may be made to the Madeira-Silverwood Presbyterian Church, 8000 Miami Avenue, Madeira, Ohio 45243, or the Dan Beard Council, BSA (Boy Scouts of America), 10078 Reading Road, Cincinnati, OH 45241.
