Obituary for William "Bill" Nunn

William Bill Nunn, age 91, passed away on January 25, 2014, at Marjorie P. Lee Gardens in Cincinnati, Ohio. He was born on July 7, 1922, in Cleveland, Ohio, to Isidor Charles Nunn (of Cleveland) and Anna Lorene Richard Nunn (originally from Ripley, Ohio). He was the beloved husband of the late Gwendolyn J. Nunn for 68 years. He was the loving father of Judith (Gerald) Dettloff, of Sycamore, IL; Thomas Nunn (Kathy Wagner), of North Carolina; Jenny (Peter) Holland, of Simsbury, CT; James Nunn, of Covington, KY; and Martha (Norman) Lewis, of Madison, NJ. He was the cherished grandfather of Katherine Berry (RJ) Mann, Elizabeth (Lynn) Holland, Ross (Sarah) Holland, Kathleen Lewis, Kimberly Lewis, Sarah Lewis, Caroline Lewis, and William Lewis, and step-grandfather of Jennifer A. Dettloff, Patrick (Aimee) Dettloff and James (Jennifer E.) Dettloff. He was the dear great-grandfather of Charlotte Holland. Bill graduated from Lakewood High School in Cleveland in 1940. He attended Ohio Wesleyan Univeristy in Delaware, OH, from 1940-1942, where he was a member of Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity. Bill was a WWII veteran, having joined the U.S. Navy in 1942, and originally entered the Naval Air Corps as a cadet, sent at first to the Iowa Pre-Flight School for the start of his pilot's training. He was later sent to St. Simon's Island for night flight director training at the U.S. Navy Radar School, and was commissioned in 1944 as an Ensign. He served aboard the escort carrier USS Sangamon as their Night Fighter Director, in the Pacific near Okinawa, where the carrier was attacked by a kamikaze in May 1945. He was discharged in 1946 with the rank of Lieutenant, JG. He married Gwendolyn M. Jones on June 17, 1944, in the First Methodist Church in Brunswick, Georgia, while he was enrolled in the U.S. Navy Radar School. They lived at various locations in Ohio after Bill was discharged in 1946, and then moved to Terrace Park, Ohio, from Cleveland in 1952. Bill and his beloved Gwen loved living in Terrace Park, and enjoyed their neighbors, their many friends, and the community life they found there. They were part of the dedicated group of residents in the 1950s who were responsible for fund raising and building the Terrace Park Swim Club. Their children honored them in 2011, by gifting them with a Lifetime Membership in the Terrace Park Historical Society. Bill worked at Masonite Fabricators in Blue Ash, Ohio, before starting his own business, Allparts, Inc., in 1965, which he ran for many years before retiring. He very much enjoyed his membership in the Milford Gun Club, and the friendships he made there. He and Gwen were long-time members of St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Terrace Park. Bill was a kind, courteous and intelligent man. His loyalty and love for his wife and children were a special gift, and the love Bill and Gwen extended to their children and grandchildren were an anchoring force for them all. Always ready to talk with thoughtfulness and consideration to each one of his family members, he will be greatly missed by all of them. Bill was also preceded in death by his parents, and by his brothers, John Richard Nunn and Robert Charles Nunn. The family would like to offer particular thanks to the staff of both Deupree House and Marjorie P. Lee Gardens for the wonderful care they provided to both Bill and Gwen over the last 15 months. A Memorial service will be 1:00 pm, Saturday, February 1, 2014, at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Terrace Park.
