Obituary for Rose Ann (nee; Benak) Noterman

Rose Ann Benak Noterman born September 7, 1906, Cincinnati, Ohio. Died May 9, 2008 at age 101, Cincinnati, Ohio. Survived by daughter Mary Patricia Noterman Esposito, son-in-law Richard C. Burger, grandsons David and Mark Esposito, granddaughter Katherine M. Esposito Scarpinski, and great granddaughters Kala Rose Esposito Scarpinski and Elsa Lyn Scarpinski. Step mother to John Stanley (Jake) Noterman and Esther Noterman Hern, both deceased. Survived by step grandchildren Lyn Noterman Sorenson, John S. Noterman, Mike Noterman, Mark Noterman, Clifford Hern, Mary Hern Benninghofen, and Elaine Hern Davidson. In all, Rose had one child of her own who gave her 3 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren, plus 2 step children who provided 7 step grandchildren, 7 step great grandchildren, and one step great great grandchild. Rose was a good Catholic woman who devoted her entire life to her Noterman family, since she had little family of her own. Born to a Hungarian immigrant mother, Rosa Vancsik Benak and Romanian father, Paul Benak, she grew up an only child. Her mother and father immigrated to America (New York, Ellis Island) in the summer of 1906. Her father became homesick and returned to Romania shortly after arriving in the United States. Her mother Rosa stayed in America and settled in Cincinnati, where she had a sister. Rosa later remarried to Alex Grubin, who raised Rose as his stepdaughter, and supported his family as a railroad man. Rose married John Joseph Noterman in 1933, and helped him raise his two young children Jake and Esther from his former marriage. After both had left home for marriages of their own, Rose became pregnant with her only child, Mary Patricia (Patty) Noterman, and devoted the rest of her life to her. Rose didn't have many hobbies, nor did she have any vices. She lived alone and kept to herself, never wanting to be a burden or to get in anyone else's way. She liked to garden and cook, and she played cards or Scrabble often. She also enjoyed reading novels and mysteries. Most of all, she spent time with her grandchildren, whom she loved dearly. After retiring as a bookkeeper, she was always ready and eager to travel to visit family in Ohio, Florida, California, and Pennsylvania. She also took trips to Europe and Australia with her lady friends Elsa Esposito, Maggie Nuelsen, and Carol Sohl (all now deceased); these were special trips that she immensely enjoyed. Rose spent her entire life in Cincinnati. She grew up downtown near Music Hall and Findlay Market. Later, she lived in Norwood, Price Hill, Delhi, and then again in Norwood from 1956 until 1989. After she sold her home in Norwood, she lived with Patty and her family in Evendale. On April 1, 1999, she fell and broke her hip, and that changed everything, for she never came home again. After surgery, she went to a rehabilitation center for recovery, and then on to assisted living at The Arbors at Milford for 8 years. In January 2007, she moved to the nursing facility at SEM Haven in Milford, where she received excellent care until she died. Memorial services 3:00 p.m. Saturday May 24, 2008 at Craver Riggs Funeral Home & Crematory in Milford, Ohio,.
