Obituary for Richard H. Ward

Richard Hackney, “Dick,” Ward died peacefully on January 25, 2017 at age 93. A lifelong Cincinnatian, Dick was born at Christ Hospital on June 8, 1923. He grew up in Clifton and attended Hughes High School where he was football captain, swim team captain, Senior Class President and Honor Roll student. Dick attended Denison University before and after serving as a pilot in the Army Air Corps during World War II for three years. While at Denison, he became a member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity. He served again as an Air Force Pilot and a legal officer for two years during the Korean War, 1950 - 1952. Dick continued in the Air Force Reserve for twenty years, and was called to active duty again in October, 1962 during the Cuban Missile Crisis, when he served for two months as a JAG officer. Dick was a graduate of the University of Cincinnati College of Law and was admitted to the bar in Ohio in 1949. He was an Assistant Prosecuting Attorney for Hamilton County from 1953 to 1957. In 1958 he founded the Drew & Ward firm with Ray Drew. A member of the Cincinnati Bar Association, he served as its president from 1976 to 1977 and was a member of its Grievance Committee for 19 years. He also belonged to the Ohio State Bar Association and the American Bar Association where he served in the House of Delegates from 1978 to 1984, and served on the three-person Board of Elections from 1986 to 1989. Dick was a Fellow of the Ohio State Bar Foundation and the American Bar Foundation. He was a village councilman in Mariemont from 1954 to 1958 and a member of the Mariemont School Board from 1965 to 1973, serving as its president from 1968 to 1970. For many years, he was a member of the Board of Trustees for AAA Cincinnati and served as Board Chairman from 1990 to 2001. Dick was a longtime member of the Gyro Club of Cincinnati (president 1965) and the University Club (president 1988). He belonged to the Cincinnati Country Club and Ryland Lakes Country Club where he enjoyed swimming and playing golf into his nineties. He was also proud to be a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason. Dick was a lifelong Episcopalian, having belonged to Calvary Church in Clifton until he moved to Mariemont in 1948. He then joined Holy Trinity Church in Madisonville. While serving on the vestry, Dick helped relocate Holy Trinity to Kenwood. In the 1960s, Dick became a member of St. Thomas Church in Terrace Park where he also served on the vestry. Dick was predeceased by his wife Joan Grove Ward in 1986. He is survived by his daughters, Suzanne Ward of Nashville, TN and Amy Ward (Cove) Heilbronner of Ryland, KY and by his son Richard G., “Nick” (Katrina) Ward of Ryland, KY. He was beloved “Daddy Dick” to seven grandchildren: Poe Heilbronner (Chris) Merley, Taylor (Chelsea) Heilbronner, Ward Heilbronner, Laura Ward (Sam) McDonald, Ellis Ward, John Debbink and Erik (Kait) Debbink. He was blessed with three great-grandchildren: Cadence and Peyton Merley, and Hudson Heilbronner.
A memorial service will be held at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Terrace Park, OH on Friday, February 3 at 4:00 p.m. A reception will follow the service.
