Obituary for Martha E. McIlvoy

Martha (Karpowicz) McIlvoy, 91, of Granite City, Illinois, passed away on October 21 at her home in Sem Haven Rehabilitation Center in Milford, Ohio. Martha was born April 21, 1924, in Madison, Illinois. She grew up with her siblings, Anna, Anthony, Carol, and Therese, the children of Marcella and Peter, Lithuanian immigrants. She attended St. Marys School, and in high school Martha met Wendell McIlvoy. They were married in Ft. Worth, Texas. Martha worked in the accounting field, surviving the tuberculosis epidemic and living through many other hard times and good times. Martha, a naturally loving and openhearted person, opened the hearts of all she knew, and inspired love in them. Among family and friends and fellow members of the St. Elizabeths parish, she was admired for her wide range of craft skills, and she was especially appreciated by her fellow members in the St. Elizabeths Quilters Group. She was a Eucharist minister, a 4-H leader, and a President of Home Extension. She considered her children her greatest accomplishment in life. Her children counted themselves lucky to grow in the warm, bright light of her. She had 15 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Wendell, her parents Peter and Marcella, her sisters Ann Gregowicz and Caroline Sax, and her great grandchild Abigail Grace McIlvoy. She is survived by her children, David, Thomas, Kevin, Jeffry and Wendy. She was fond of the Robert Test poem, To Remember Me, asking at the end of life, Give my sins to the devil. Give my soul to God. If by chance, you wish to remember me, do it with a kind deed or word to someone who needs you. If you do as I ask, I will live forever. Contributions may be made in her name to the Sem Terrace Marthas Trees Fund, 5371 S. Milford Rd., Milford, OH 45150. A funeral mass will be held on Friday, November 6, 2015, 10:00am at St. Elizabeths Catholic Church, 2301 Pontoon Rd., Granite City, Illinois.
