Obituary for Lawrence J. Essember Jr.

LAWRENCE J. ESSEMBER, MD June 2, 1925 - January 12, 2014. Loving husband, father, pediatrician to three generations of children, avid skier and golfer, Dr. Essember is now making house calls in Heaven. Born in Peabody on June 2, 1925 to Lawrence and Mabel (Meade) Essember, young �Bud� attended Peabody schools and graduated from Peabody High in 1942. After graduating from Boston College, he married his childhood sweetheart, Gertrude (Bugler). They were married from 1948 to 1983, and had five children. Dr. Essember received his medical education at Tufts University School of Medicine, and postdoctoral training at DC General Hospital, Bethesda Naval Hospital, Chelsea Naval Hospital and Mass General Hospital. Dr. Essember was an instructor of Pediatrics at Harvard Medical School and served on the medical staff of MGH, Hunt Memorial, and Beverly Hospital. He was the founding physician of North Shore Pediatrics, where he practiced for many years with Dr. Nathan Fearer. It was at NSP that he met the love of his life, Carol Ann (Stothfang) Essember, whom he married in 1986. In 1988, he and Carol moved to Vail, Colorado, where he became the first pediatrician to practice at the Vail Mountain Medical Center. An avid skier and golfer, Dr. Essember enjoyed life in Vail, where his idea of the �perfect day� was one in which he could see kids, ski and golf all in the same day. In 1994, he returned to Massachusetts to be with family, and rejoined North Shore Pediatrics. When he retired from NSP in 2009, Dr. Essember had spent 54 years in pediatric medicine, and had developed special expertise in the treatment of ADHD. He and Carol relocated to Loveland, Ohio shortly after his retirement, where she devoted herself to his care. Dr. Essember was preceded in death by his parents and his first wife, Gertrude. He is survived by his loving wife of 28 years, Carol Ann; his sister Mary Bradley of Fort Worth, TX; his children Mary (Norm) Peterson of Bozeman, MT, Lawrence (Sook) Essember of Peabody, Janet Essember of Gloucester, Carol Fortin of Belfast, ME, and Trudy Almquist of Natick; stepsons Steve Multner of Tewksbury and Scott Multner of Loveland, OH; grandchildren Laura (Rob) French, Sara Essember, Kate Peterson, Colin and Nicholas Fortin, Stephen and Tia Rose Almquist, and Scott, Kyle and Kellie Multner; nephew Brad Bradley and niece Laurie Michalski, and dear friend Dr. Frank Chow. He will be greatly missed by all those who love him, and all those whose lives he touched in his long career. According to Dr. Essember�s wishes, cremation has taken place. A celebration of his wonderful life will be announced at a later date.
