Obituary for H. Samuel "Sam" Cone

H. Samuel Cone died on Friday, September 24th, 2010 at the age 87 in Christ Hospital. He was born in Buffalo, New York on September 20th, 1923, the son of Marguerite Keyes and attended grade school in Buffalo, New York. His mother was married to Phillip H. Cone in 1939 so Sam and his younger brother Frank Keyes Cone moved to Cincinnati and took the adopted family name of Cone. Sam�s Brother Frank was born July 28, 1928 and died on January 16th, 1976. Sam attended Terrace Park High School where he met his future bride Mary Turpin Gerard. Sam spent his senior year at Columbia Military Academy in Tennessee and graduated in 1943. He started college at the University of Cincinnati and on July 3, 1943 Sam voluntarily enlisted in the United States Marine Corp. He served in the South Pacific during World War II for twenty-two (22) months. Sam was discharged as a Private 1st class, weapons specialist Rifle mm, and operated Amphibian Tractors. Sam fought against the enemy at: Roi-Namur, Marshall Islands, Guam, Marianas Islands, Okinawa, Ryuku Islands. Sam was on maneuvers to invade Japan until their surrender after the second Atomic bomb was dropped. He was discharged on December 5th, 1945 and upon his return to the United States, Sam re-entered the University of Cincinnati to earn his business degree. Sam and Mary were married August 9th, 1947 at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Terrace Park, Ohio. Upon graduation from U.C., Sam began business career at the then Cincinnati Milling Machine Company (now called Milacron) and retired as Chief OHSA Technical writer for their Machine division. His Step Father, Phillip Cone was one of the original founding executives at Milacron and his brother Frank served as a Sales Executive at Milacron. Sam and Mary were very active at St. Thomas Church and Sam served on the Vestry for 2 terms plus as head usher for 10 years at the 9:15 service. Sam and Mary also taught Sunday school for three years plus were on the Church Pledging Committee for 4 years. Sam served for 4 years on the Boy Scout�s Board in Terrace Park. Mary and Sam were in charge of the Terrace Park Memorial Day Festival plus Labor Day Parade several times. Sam is survived by his three children, Stephen Keyes Cone (Meg), Mary Gerard Cone Mender (Shelly) and Marguerite Keyes Cone Denker (Randy). Sam has 7 grandchildren; Alissa Cone Arnold, Kyle Mender, Stephanie Cannon, Anna Proctor, Natalie Mender, Grace Proctor and Samuel Cone. Sam is blessed with three great grandchildren; Jack Cannon, Hudson Slater and Alexander Arnold. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, September 29th, 2010 starting 10 am at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 100 Miami Ave., Terrace Park, Ohio with a reception immediately following the service in St. Thomas parlor. There will be no visitation. A private burial will be held for the family in Greenlawn Cemetery. Darren Elin, Rector of St. Thomas Church will officiate.
