Obituary for Frederick "Fred" R. Carey

Frederick Riddick Carey, husband, father, son, brother, and educator, was taken from those who loved him most on February 21, 2014. He is survived by his beloved wife, Deborah J. Floyd, his adored daughters Katie and Ellie Carey, his admired parents Anna K. and Gibson Carey, his dearest brother and sisters, George, Margaret and Jenny, and his newest daughters, Emma and Sophie Weinstein. Additionally, he was blessed to have the love of an extended family that exemplified love and a host of dear and devoted friends. He was 51 years old. As a graduate of Cincinnati Country Day School, Fred returned to become an esteemed teacher of English and respected Dean of Students. Fred delighted in sharing his knowledge, insights and perspectives with his students, introducing them to Sherlock Holmes, Edgar Allen Poe, Hamlet, and the Transcendentalists, not to mention The Grateful Dead, canoeing on the little Miami River and how to handle a gun with knowledge, skill, and responsibility. Fred was our rock and anchor, helping us hold steady in the roughest of waters. It was on Fred we all depended for support at every levelfrom caring for aging parents, to teaching his daughters to fish and build fires, to modeling loveFred was the consummate man of integrity and honor. Quite simply, he changed lives, and we are forever grateful for his having done so. Additionally, Fred cared deeply for the people and the land around him. A volunteer for the City of Milford and Saint Thomas Episcopal Church in Terrace Park, Fred was also a vice chair of the Board of the Cincinnati Shakespeare Company and a mentor teacher at Breakthrough Cincinnati. He was a poet and a prankster. Expressing himself in verse was one aspect of his personality; his quick, dry, sense of humor was equally central to his perspective on life. A memorial service will take place on February 28 at 4:00 pm at Saint Thomas Episcopal Church, 100 Miami Avenue, Terrace Park, Ohio. All are welcome. Also a celebration of Freds life is scheduled for 2:00 pm on March 2 at Cincinnati Country Day, 6905 Given Road, Cincinnati, Ohio, 45243. All are welcome. In lieu of flowers, donations in Freds memory may be sent to the Fred Carey Bridge the Gap Fund for Scholarship Students at the Cincinnati Country Day School. 6905 Given Road, Cincinnati, Ohio 45243 or at
