Obituary for Al A. Nelson

Albert A. Nelson, dear husband of fifty-four years to Marilyn Lynn Cones Nelson, devoted father to Thomas Tiger (Jean Marie) Nelson and Holly (Dennis) Nelson Purcell. Loving and proud grandfather of Tim, Hillary, Stacy and Erin Purcell, and Rachel and Mac Nelson. Friday, September 7th, at Hospice of Cincinnati, age 83 years. Al was a loved and long-time resident of Terrace Park. He was active in civic and school affairs, and for many years he was the leader of the Villages fun Sometimes Marching Band which is a staple of every Memorial Day and Labor Day parade and concerts at the villages gazebo. Al was well known as a trumpeter. As a youngster he began lessons with the Salvation Army band (their familys home church), and he was skilled enough by age eight to play Christmas music at the corner of 7th and Race with the Salvation bandsmen. From there his music took off as he became a leader of the Withrow High School band and orchestra, and later the UC band. He also played with the College of Musics orchestra while still in high school. He financed his college schooling through earnings from his horn. Al played gigs all around town everything from military taps to gypsy funerals and he especially loved marching band music. He had many amusing stories to tell from his playing days. While courting Lynn, he sometimes dropped her off at a street corner to watch as he marched by in a parade. Money so earned paid for their date later that evening. For years he took his children and later his grandchildren and their neighborhood friends Christmas caroling, accompanying them on his trumpet. Afterwards they would return to the Nelson home for hot chocolate and cookies. Al was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity, Omicron Delta Kappa honorary society, the Caledonian Society of Cincinnati, St. Thomas Senior Singers, and he was a long-time faithful member of Armstrong United Methodist Church. He was a 31st degree Mason and a past-president of the Mariemont Kiwanis Club. He entered the Army and rose to the rank of First Lieutenant before returning to civilian life in 1953. His business career centered mainly on marketing for large corporations, and later he founded his own management consulting firm specializing in productivity improvement. The family would like to thank Dr. John Schroder, Nurse Judi, Zuzana, and Colette for their compassionate care of Al during his final weeks. A memorial service will be held at Armstrong Church, at the corner of Drake and Indian Hill Roads, Indian Hill, on Friday, September 14th at 10:00 a.m. A reception will follow in the church atrium. A private burial will be in held at Spring Grove Cemetery. If desired, in lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Salvation Army, 114 E. Central Parkway, Cincinnati, OH 45202.
